Being healthy and staying healthy for as long as possible, preventing diseases before they arise: The topic of prevention is increasingly in focus in medicine, politics, and society. A healthy lifestyle - combined with sufficient exercise, a balanced diet, and thus comprehensive supply of relevant vitamins, minerals, and trace elements - plays a central role in this.
The key to health and well-being are our body cells - the central building blocks of our lives. Each person consists of approximately 70 trillion cells. Each one of them is comparable to a small biochemical factory, where thousands of metabolic processes take place every second. In order for these processes to run smoothly, cells require a lot of protection and care. Because their condition determines our performance and energy, our metabolism, our psyche, our immune system, and ultimately our biological age.
Free Radicals - Attack on the Cells
A major threat to our cells are the so-called free radicals. These are the smallest molecules that occur everywhere in the body. Due to a missing electron, they are extremely unstable and constantly strive to balance this instability and their deficit by "stealing" their missing electron elsewhere. This makes them useful and dangerous at the same time. While, for example, our immune system uses the power of free radicals in the fight against pathogens, an "excess" of free radicals poses a danger to the health of our cells.
Oxidative stress - when the balance between free radicals and antioxidants is disrupted
Antioxidants are the opponents of free radicals and are also known as radical scavengers. Antioxidants must be consumed through diet. By eating healthily and balanced, we provide our body with enough of these antioxidants to keep the constantly occurring free radicals at bay, caused for example by stress, smoking, medication intake, UV rays, or environmental pollution.
Among the most well-known antioxidants are the vital nutrients selenium, copper, zinc, manganese, vitamin B2, vitamin C, and vitamin E. They help protect the cells from oxidative stress - and they do so in teamwork.
Healthy Cells - Basis for Effective Prevention
The better the cells are protected, the better the conditions for the various functions of our body. In terms of prevention, the immune system, thyroid, bones and joints, or the cardiovascular system play a central role here.
